O-An Zendo: Zen Meditation and Spiritual Center in Central Pennsylvania: FAQ
1. Is the kyosaku used at O-An?
No.

2. Are there any fees or charges?
There is no membership fee. The suggested donation for Sunday Sitting is $5. For Full-day Sitting, $15. Alternate work service as dana is possible, as no one is ever turned away for lack of funds. O-An is a non-profit organization and is completely self-sustaining.

3. Is there beginner's instruction?
Yes. It is offered by request every Sunday at 10 a.m. Please contact Barbara Anderson at 814-357-6959.

4. Are there any requirements for attendance at O-An?
No. O-An's Board of Directors has decided to eliminate formal membership in the zendo in favor of allowing each individual to determine just what membership means for him/her. No special dress or equipment is required. No prior experience with meditation is necessary, nor is any understanding or affiliation with Buddhism expected.

5. What do I need to know before coming to visit O-An Zendo?
Silence is observed when entering the zendo. We encourage complete stillness, and discourage unnecessary movement during meditation, so as to recognize the integrity of practice and the needs of fellow practitioners. Wear loosely-fitted clothing. Cushions, benches and chairs are provided, and all are used. We welcome newcomers.

6. What is the role of religion at O-An?
Those who practice at O-An are invited to join in meditation and a simple set of rituals which include incense-lighting, chanting, and bowing. These activities are designed to achieve one thing only and that is to open into the present moment. Each person is free to participate as they feel comfortable. For more details, please follow this link.

7. How many attend the zendo or are affiliated with it?
Sunday attendance varies and ranges from 8 to 25, although we maintain a much larger list of persons who attend zendo activities. Most are on our email list.

8. Who leads the meditation?
Generally, leadership of the meditation is shared by sangha members. There is no appointed teacher or single leader of the O-An sangha (community).

9. Where is O-An Zendo located?
O-An is located in Julian Woods Community, about half an hour from State College, Pennsylvania, off Alternate Route 220 between Port Matilda and Milesburg. Directions are available on this Web site or by calling 814-357-6959.

10. Are children welcome at the zendo?
We welcome children at the zendo, and provide a meditation and yoga experience suited to young people, while the adults sit meditation.
