O-An Zendo: Zen Meditation and Spiritual Center in Central Pennsylvania: Dana

Dana

Like many other nonprofit organizations, O-An is supported by the generosity of its members and affiliates. But in the Zen tradition, a person's gifts to the zendo—be they financial or work service—are considered 'Dana', a part of spiritual practice. Dana in Sanskrit means generosity. In the Mahayana Buddhist tradition, it is the First Perfection.

We think of Dana as an expression of our deep gratitude and desire to share with others what we ourselves have received, in order to support others in their practice and on their path. We recognize Dana as an offering to the zendo and the sangha (spiritual community) as a means to nurture both.

Although we trust the generosity of our sangha and visitors to the zendo, we do suggest donation amounts: $5 for Sunday sitting and $15 for Full-Day Meditation, for example. We welcome work service in exchange for participation in zendo activities in lieu of financial donations for those who choose this form of Dana. All contributions are welcome regardless of expression or amount. Because O-An is a nonprofit, 501C 3 corporation, donations are tax deductible.

We have no membership fee and currently are self-sustaining, although we welcome contributions from anyone wishing to support O-An. We encourage our sangha in the practice of Dana, seeing it as part of our seamless practice along with meditation and other practices.

Visitors and members can contribute Dana as they enter the zendo or by mail to O-An Zendo, 1 Endless Circle, Julian Woods Lane, Julian, PA 16844.

Ultimately the practice of Dana is the gift of oneself in full measure, whatever the choice of expression. We at O-An deeply appreciate each gift.
